In 2007 I was in Iolanthe, or, The Peer and the Peri, at Lyric Theatre. The costume designer, Pat, who is a delight and as creative as the day is long, fashioned wings for all the fairies. The wings were built using knee-highs stretched over ovals made of wire coat hangers. They were then coated with watered-down white glue and painted. Each wing was made up of two of these ovals: one each for the upper and lower halves of the wings. Pat let me paint a handful of the wings, and I worked pretty hard on it. Pat had assigned a flower to each fairy, and the wings needed to look like that flower and match the costume. Bethany and Michelle took pictures of the wings, and I thank them for letting me use them. You also might notice that we added color to our hair. Fun stuff.
